About

Tony Ferguson

This blog is mainly about three things.

 1)  Politics and current affairs.

I was first elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor on Newbury District Council (subsequently West Berkshire Council) in 1992 and was re-elected on three further occasions before standing down in 2003. During that time I chaired various committees and was on the Council’s  Executive with reponsibility for Public Protection and Waste.  I was deputy leader of the Council from 1995 to 1997 and again in 2003.  I also chaired the West Berkshire Council Liberal Democrat Group.  I was Chair of Newbury Constituency Liberal Democrats during the parliamentary by-election in 1993. I have stood for Parliament at each of the last three elections in 1997 in Caerphilly, in 2001 in Nuneaton and in 2005 in Warley.

I was also heavily involved in returning Greenham Common to public use and chaired the committee which successfully promoted the Greenham and Crookham Commons Act 2002 through parliament.   I was a Trustee of  Greenham Common Trust for several years and chaired its Distribution Committee from its inception  until 2003.  I am currently a director of New Greenham Park Limited.  I also chaired the Greenham and Crookham Commons Commission (established by the Act of Parliament) from its inception until June 2007 and I am currently the vice chair.

I was also a member of the Kennet and Avon Canal Partnership which successfully made a bid to the Heritage Lottery fund for £25m to ensure the long term future of the Canal.

I have campaigned on Health and Safety issues at the AWE sites in Aldermaston and Burghfield and was instrumental in the setting up of the AWE Local Liaison Committee as a result of a motion I proposed to then then Newbury District Council.  I sat on this committee from its inception in 1993 until  2003.

I was also a Trustee of West Berkshire Mencap from May 2002 until December 2005.

2) Football

I am a life long supporter of Leeds United and have more than a passing interest in the fortunes of Reading as well since I encouraged my eldest son to support his local team at the age of four on the grounds that it would mean he could see more games.  He (and I) have now seen far more Reading games than Leeds games although when they played each other for a  couple of seasons we were in opposite ends of the ground!

3) Bikes

As in Motorbikes in general and Harley Davidsons specifically.  One of my main relaxations in life is a good long ride on my Harley Davidson Fatboy.  My wife has one as well tastefully decorated in pink and blue with a pink leather jacket and helmet – to match her nail varnish she says!
