Hush Puppy Man Puts His Foot In It!

March 3, 2010

I am sure that David Cameron must be wondering just what it was that encouraged him to bring Ken Clarke back into the shadow cabinet.  According to The Guardian Ken has publicly highlighted the inexperience of the Tory leadership.

“Appearing before a City audience with 43-year-old Cameron, and 38-year-old Osborne, Clarke, 69, and now the shadow business secretary, said: “I am delighted to appear as part of this young, inexperienced team, which is a quite extraordinarily united team.”

To be fair he went on to contrast the Tory teams inexperience with the Prime Minister’s experience in wrecking the economy.  All the same I expect that Gordon Brown will be only too happy to point out, in the televised debates that have just been agreed, that even Cameron’s own supporters think he is inexperienced.

Your comments about the TV debates highlight just why I will not be watching them – 90 minutes of PMQ’s type behaviour will be intolerable. How are we supposed to respect and trust people who behave like five year olds ?

From my understanding of it I think some of it may be ok assuming the moderator is on the ball.

The Guardian pieces says “According to a strict set of rules thrashed out in negotiations between the broadcasters and parties, each leader will make an opening statement on the programme’s theme before taking questions. Each leader will answer all questions and be given time to react to opponents’ answers and make further points of their own. A period of free debate may follow.”

It is the period of free debate that worries me – they will all be talking over the top of each other
