Great Wall

February 20, 2007

According to the BBC researchers are to carry out the first detailed survey of the Great Wall of China to establish just how long it is. I walked an extremely small section many years ago and it is a very impressive structure.
It amazes me that we do not know how long the wall is – we only have an estimate of approximately 3,100 miles. The study will go on for four years and will check the exact route of the wall as well as its length.

The theory of Fractals of course tells us that we will never actually know the length of the wall, any more than we know the ‘actual’ length of the coastline of Norway. Cue Hitchikers Guide references…

There was a time that was on my list of must sees – funny how your priorities change.
